Skype - … call home

After we had arrived in Perth, Western Australia, we wanted to find a way to call home as cheaply as possible. Have you ever paid an oversea phone call? Unbelievable expensive. To write emails is almost free of charge, of course you have to pay for an internet connection, but sometimes you really need to hear the voice of your parents, relatives or friends. Besides the landline phone, where we got a very cheap deal, we found Skype on the internet.

Skype is a small program for making free calls over the internet by using VoIP technologie. VoIP stands for “Voice over IP” where the IP stands for IP address. It works like a normal telephone but instead of talking into the phone you talk through your computer using a microphone and speakers or a headset. The best thing about is that calls from one computer to another computer are absolutly free of any kind of charges, except of the internet connection of course.

Thanks to the wonderful software of Skype we have the opportunity to stay in contact with Vienna. Even my grandparents have already bought a computer to skype with us. Not only once we spent hours talking through the internet with friends and relatives living in Vienna.
