In Perth are many construction sites. On every corner arises a new house, an appartment or office building. There are even still some empty blocks available close to the city center. All this gives you somehow the impression that Perth is growing every day. How did it look like 20 years ago?
It’s interesting that in recent years the city administration began to tear down old ugly industrial areas in order to rebuild them completly as residential estates. For example we live in Subiaco, which was formerly an industrial district. Today it’s a so-called yuppy district, in which all houses are planned by the same architect. Subiaco looks very nice and fancy, but of couse it has not the charm of a naturally grown area.
At the moment they refurbish another district, South Perth. All old houses are demolished and replaced with new houses, planned by one architect.
Think of this in Vienna. We tear down a part of Ottakring and rebuild it again. Would be funny, wouldn’t it?
