The Old Mill is one of the oldest buildings in Perth, because it’s built in 1833. In Australian standards this is really really old!
That this mill exists isn’t widely known. The mill sits right next to the freeway bridge which crosses the Swan River and it’s so small that we missed the mill, although we were looking for it. We had expected a much bigger building than it actually is.
The entry fee is 2 dollars and inside a friendly old lady tells you the story of the mill and the hard life the first settler had here in West Australia.
The mill is cute, but not amazingly exciting. But if you’re interested in life of the 19th century, then you like the mill stones, which had to be imported from France, and the oven, where they baked the bread, which was surely rather dark from the outside, and the hand towels, which were recycled sugar bags.
The visit will not take long, not longer than 20 minutes and can easily combined with a visit in a nice cafe on the river side of South Perth.
