TV advertising

The TV programm is rather not so good in Western Australia, but the advertising in between the shows is pretty surprising.

Surprising, because it’s totally normal to have TV advertising about the Italian restaurant which is around the corner of your place. In Austria where we watch also many German channels, the tv channels never show regional advertising. TV ads about the restaurants in a suburb and about small furniture retailers seem therefore a bit strange to us. The advertising minute has to be comparable cheap to German television minutes. But this is understandable, because the target group is much smaller, since only 1.3 million people are living in Perth.

There are a lot of TV ads which are authorised by some kind of Western Australian government authority. You get quite drastically informed about the consequences of smoking, drinking, drinking and driving, speeding, drug abuse and things you shouldn’t do. These ads are rather gross, so you don’t want to nearly finish your dinner anymore. But if these ads really prevent someone of doing these things? I doubt that.

On and off they promote some health campaigns. Since we are here in Perth, we were informed about the risks of breast cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer, meningitis and other deadly deseases. Of course attached with donation appeals.

We were also surprised about advertising for remedies for erection problems and drugs for vaginal rashs, because so far we thought that the Australians are rather prude with sexual things.
