The Southwest of Western Australia is well known for its very good wines. The wine region is called Margaret River and has huge wineries. And I mean it, they are really huge. It’s more like a real wine industry and the big wineries have to be quite successful, because on their big estates the houses or rather mansions are very big and very beautiful.
The only thing which is missing are “Heurigen” - that are Austrian wine places where you can drink wine and eat good food and spend a nice time with your friends. Here the wineries have no restaurants included, but they are open from 10 am to 5 pm and you can have wine tastings.
The wine tastings are great. You choose a winery, you go into their sales room and there are nice people waiting for you, pouring the wines in a tasting glass. One tasting round contains 5 wines, first you try 5 red wines, then 5 white wines. When you have tasted 5 wines, you have drunk an equivalent of one glass of wine. So you can still drive the car. The wine tasting is free. If you like the wines, you can buy bottles of them, and if you don’t like them, you buy nothing.
We visited 4 wineries and we bought quite some wine bottles. The wine is really excellent! Also the wines are put in very nice boxes, so the wine not only tastes good, but the boxes look great too!
What we thought was pretty weird is that in each winery you could buy also a lot of merchandise products of the winery. T-shirts, hats, even bikinis with the winery logo on it. I really can’t think of an Austrian winery logo on my bikini!
Here are the four wineries, we have visited:
- Vasse Felix - one of the biggest winery in the Margaret River wine region
- Mad Fish - a well known winery in Western Australia
- Palandri - another big winery
- We’re - a very young and therefore small winery, but the Chiraz is fantastic!
