The Margaret River region is not only known for their splendid wines, but also for the huge number of caves.
There are about 350 caves, 4 of them are publicly accessible. We visited the Ngilgi Cave, close to Yallingup.
Each 30 minutes a tour through the cave starts, but the tour guide only brings you to the cave, tells you a bit of the history and that’s it. You explore the cave by your own. The tour lasts approx. 1 hour and involves a lot of stairs! Therefore you better have no problems with stepping stairs and you shouldn’t be too big around your belly, because sometimes it gets really narrow down there. The stalactites and stalacmites are nicely lit and every now and then there are signs telling you were to look. It has comfortable 18 degree Celsius with a humidity of 95%. It gets pretty hot there.
We are probably not the right persons to really appreciate these caves. The caves all look the same in a way. But such a cave tour is a good alternative when the weather is so bad as it was when we were there, because inside it’s nice and warm and not raining and windless.
Our short trip to the Southwest of Western Australia is described in 6 articles:

The real fascination of a cave is lost when it is tamed. A wild cave is where its at. Not knowing what is at the bottom of a deep chasm or whether you are the first person to ever crawl down a muddy tunnel would change your whole perspective. Mick http://rockwatching.wordpress.com
